Lesson 1 word terms

1. Auto correct -an automatic feature in software that corrects common spelling and capitalization errors, and can replace certain designated characters with special symbols
2. Clipboard – an area of the computer’s memory reserved by windows to temporarily store text and other objects that have been cut or copied from a file
3. Copy – a command that duplicates a selected data
4. Cut – a command that removes selected data
5. Document – in word, a file of any length that contains text and/or other objects. Letters, resumes, memos, and reports are examples of common documents
6. Edit – to make changes to document
7. File – a collection of data or information saved and stored under a name
8. File type – The kind of data stored in a file. Most modern operating systems use the filename extension to determine the file type though some store this information elsewhere in the file system. The file type is used to choose an appropriate icon to represent the file in a GUI and the correct application with which to view, edit, run, or print the file.
9. Find – a command that searches for specified text and or formatting in a document.

10. Grammar Checker – An editing tool that reviews the grammar used in a file, highlights possible errors, and suggests one or more ways to fix the error.

11. Insertion Point – A blinking vertical line that shows your current position in a document.

12. Insert Mode – A method of inserting text into a file by pushing existing characters to the right instead of overwriting them.

13. Overtype Mode – A method of inserting text into a file by overwriting existing characters with new ones.

14. Paste – a command that inserts text or an object from the clipboard into a document.

15. Placeholders – In word, formatted text within a template file that you can replace with your own text.

16. Replace – A command that searches fir specified text and/or formatting in a document and replaces it with new text and/or formatting that you specified.

17. Save – To store a document on a disk as a named file.

18. Spelling Checker – An editing tool that reviews the spelling in a file, highlights possible misspelled words, and suggests one or more replacements.

19. Template – A file that contains basic formatting, text, and/or formulas that you can customize to create a new file.

20. Thesaurus – In word, a language tool that provides definitions and a list of synonyms for a selected word.
